There are too many variables to define what is more important: to mix in a very basic way or don’t mix at all. DJing is about having a great music collection. Being able to put those records in a perfect order is what the crowd looking for. Music needs not to be boring. Without mixing, music can be like a deadbeat. Undeniably, music mixing is like great spices. It makes a freaking amazing scene. Great mix totally highlights performances.
However, to avoid trash – don’t mix everything or don’t mix at all. Unless, you are very good in using special transitions, loops, effects or any special edits. There are definitely various tricks, don’t mix every song if you are not familiar with them yet. Mixing is not the most important thing. The genre of music is also a big factor. There is some Hip Hop or Commercial EDM especially with those intros that are instantly recognized, then mixing need not really to be done.
Audiences are the most important factor to be considered in the set. They are the final judge of your performance. If there are no people, then better there is no set. The thing here is most people love the song more than the place. Want to spice up your set? Here are some of the tricks:
Measure the tempo
An accurate measure of the tempo of all your songs is a very good idea. Generally, the measurement of tempo is necessary to match the tempo of the new and old song as well as to set the tempo of various effect boxes correctly to the tempo that is currently played.
Using the channel Upfader
The fader offers tricks that are not too diverse but still appealing in their own way. It normally involves closing the fader in a tactical moment or swiftly moving it back and forth. You can do this to make the last beat preceding the track’s climax, transform the sound effects or add some interaction to the process.
Using the EQ
The EQ gives you more creative freedom because it allows you to control the sound in three instead of one dimension. You can play around the lows to fuel sing-along effect when a catchy hook cut the bass. For anxious metallic sound, you can cut the lows and mids to make the guests freeze. You can also boost the highs to make a seemingly different sound.
The sound effect makes DJ’s set more entertaining. It is an artistic choice but don’t overdo it. Effects help transition and enhance DJ performance. But if you rely on the effects, they become a problem. You can use levels and EQ first to create interest.
Track the signal
Do your best and track the signal by keeping your levels out of the red. Make sure you are getting a good signal both in and out of the mixer to avoid breaking the fun and to achieve the best sound quality during the DJ performance or recording.
Mostly, the crowd does not even hear the mixes. Most people don’t even recognize songs when you mix them. They actually noticed the transition. So playing at full volume with all the EQ’s normal, people immediately find out what song is playing. But DJ’s who took out the base and lowered the volume knows easily what really the song is. However, the beat is more recognizable than the other kind of mixing used.
Whether you are Mixing or DJing, you should get that high point evening by changing songs quickly. You do not have to mix a lot. It’s more about throwing on the right tracks at the right time.
